BCHS International
The BCHS International Homestay Program allows students from other countries the opportunity to come to the United States and receive a quality, college preparatory education that equips them for acceptance into top American universities.
One unique aspect of BCHS' homestay program is that the international students stay in a local home and have a family-like experience away from their own family. With international students from countries such as South Korea, China, Japan, Vietnam, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Cameroon in recent years, there is increased diversity on the BCHS campus which benefits not only the international students but also the entire student body.

  • Academic Program

Bakersfield Christian is dedicated to ensuring that every student receives an excellent college preparatory education. All of our international students are given guidance and instruction to apply to American universities and colleges. To view some of the colleges and universities our students have been accepted to in previous years, please go to College Placement.

We offer the following programs for your preparation:

College Preparatory Program - Our college preparatory program is based upon the University of California and California State University academic requirements. (Your transcripts will be assessed to ensure that you will receive the necessary academic classes.) Students in this program may take Honors and AP classes if they qualify. Qualification is based on GPA, teacher recommendation, course prerequisite grade and testing.

Scholars Program Diploma - This program exceeds the recommended course work of our college preparatory program. It also requires a minimum number of Honors and AP classes in both the humanities and math/science. For qualifying students, this is an excellent choice for those wishing to attend a top tier American university.

Encouragement and assistance will be provided for the TOEFL, SAT and/or ACT testing for college entrance.

BCHS has a comprehensive selection of course offerings which includes both Honors and AP classes. For a complete list and description of these courses, please refer to our Departments and Curriculum.

Students are enrolled in classes with the domestic population of the school. One class period each day is spent in an English lab class where students are given supplemental English help as well as instruction for all classes. Additional support is available through Educational Support Services (at an additional fee) for those that need it.
  • Homestay Program

Each student is required to live with a local family. International students are placed with Christian host families who are screened and approved by the school. Each adult in the household has had a criminal background check for students' safety. Students are expected to engage in the host family's life style and attend church regularly. The homestay program fee includes food, lodging and transportation to and from school.
  • Student Support

As part of the International Homestay Program, BCHS offers support to the students through the Director of Admissions and support staff. They will provide support and counsel to the international student while attending BCHS. They will also serve as liaisons between the school, host family coordinator, student, host family, representing organization and parent(s)/legal guardian(s) (if applicable).

Host an International Student

Bakersfield Christian High School is looking for families interested in hosting international students. Families receive a stipend to cover the costs of providing a home for our international students. If you are interested in hosting a student or have other general questions or concerns, please contact the Director of International Student Life.

It is our intent to place all international students attending BCHS with an American host family during the time they are enrolled at our school.

Our desire is that the international student and their host family will develop, over time, a strong relationship which encourages learning and growth for both the student and the family. The host family is asked to treat the student as a member of their family and in turn should expect the student to show respect and consideration by following the family rules and sharing in chores and other activities.

See Host Family Job Description for a complete understanding of the host family expectations. Once you have reviewed the job description, contact the Director of International Student Life for an application.

The Homestay Experience

The opportunity to study in another country provides the international student with great potential for personal growth and maturity while gaining academic knowledge and developing cross-cultural awareness. Serving as a host family offers opportunities to discover and appreciate other cultures and to learn, as a family, how to show love and hospitality beyond their own immediate family.

The host family and international student will be supported by the Director of International Student Life. The director's goal is to ensure the student will be safe and well-cared for in a Christian environment. The Director of International Student Life also acts as a liaison with the school (and agency if applicable) regarding hosting questions, counsels and encourages families, provides backup placements when emergencies arise, and is the overseer of a successful homestay experience.
