74 percent AP Exam Pass Rate places BCHS more than 15 percent above state, national averages

Huge strides were made by BCHS administration and faculty during the 2017-18 school year to increase student success on AP Exams. These moves paid off when the College Board revealed this year's AP Exam scores — the 148 BCHS students who took 246 AP Exams last May resulted in an overall pass rate of 74 percent. This cleared the state and national overall AP Exam pass rates by more than 15 percent, and also marked the highest pass rates in school history.
Students must meet certain criteria before taking an AP course. In previous years, it was assumed that taking an AP course meant a student would automatically take the corresponding AP Exam. However, after research revealed that many colleges view an AP course on a student's transcript independent of taking an AP exam, BCHS introduced a new policy in 2017-18 that made the decision to take the AP exam optional. Each student is able to determine, based on their performance in the course and the recommendation of their teacher, if they think it is best to take the final or the AP Exam according to their post high school educational goals. Even with this new student-driven freedom, 93 percent of BCHS students taking an AP course elected to take the corresponding AP Exam. BCHS' mean score of 3.19 also exceed California's and the global mean scores of 2.89 and 2.83 respectively.

Below are the 2018 AP Exam pass rates listed for each of the 14 courses BCHS offered last year. The number of students taking each course is denoted in parenthesis. A score of 3 is considered passing; a 5 is the highest possible AP Exam score.

With the addition of the SAT preparation, students' critical thinking skills are being strengthened, which also helps in the rigorous AP courses. BCHS is also committed to keeping its AP faculty at the top of their instructional game through staying connected to what the College Board is doing. One way in which this initiative is achieved is by each AP teacher receiving direct instruction, in their subject areas, at the National AP Conference every other year.

In 2017-18, 45 percent of sophomores, juniors and seniors took at least one AP Course. BCHS is continuing to expand its AP course offerings each year. Explore more about the benefits of AP Courses at CollegeBoard.org or learn more about BCHS' AP Program and AP Course Offerings.
