New event features Carr family, increases diversity at BCHS
BCHS Class of 2009 grad, Derek Carr was making headlines all week due to his history-making NFL contract. However, his appearance at a new fundraiser for BCHS proved he is still the humble servant of God we all remember.
The Carr family was featured at "Soaring for Diversity," a new BCHS fundraising event which was held at the Petroleum Club on June 23. David and Derek signed autographs prior to leading a Chalk Talk which showed an inside look at the NFL. Then President John Buetow led a Q&A session with the three brothers and their father, Rodger. A one-of-a-kind football signed by five Raiders - Derek Carr, Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree, Marshawn Lynch and Khalil Mack - was auctioned to help raise money for the cause of the night.
The title, "Soaring for Diversity," only hinted at the full purpose for the gathering. While the primary purpose of the event was to provide funding to increase the amount of student diversity found on the campus of BCHS, it also will serve to augment the funding for both our athletic program in general, and for our football program specifically.
Increasing student diversity has become a stated goal at BCHS. Certainly, increasing socio-economic and racial diversity falls squarely within this goal. Yet diversity also includes providing the opportunity of a BCHS education for students with special physical and learning accommodations who have college as a future goal (consequently meeting our college preparatory mission).
From the generosity of the event sponsors to the giving spirits of the Carr family, BCHS was truly blessed by all who supported the event and more importantly there will be Eagles on campus that wouldn't be able to attend the school without the support from this night.
