ACADEMIC TEAMS & PROGRAMS

Beyond the classroom curriculum, BCHS offers its students expanded learning through an extensive variety of academic programs.

By participating in these clubs and national organizations, students gain a better understanding of the subjects in which they have a propensity during their high school years and gain experience that can affect the college selection process while also providing other opportunities.

  • BCHS was the second private school in California to launch an FFA chapter. In addition to gaining leadership experience in the agriculture industry through membership to this national organization, BCHS offers a full-fledged Ag Science Program. In lieu of the traditional science courses, students who plan to apply to colleges with strong ag programs have the option of taking specialized ag science classes each year.

  • In addition to an elective forensics course, BCHS students have the opportunity to compete on the speech and debate team. In recent years, BCHS students have advanced to compete at the state and national forensics levels.

  • BCHS assembles some of its top math students to compete in California State University, Bakersfield's Math Field Day as well as other competitions.

  • The robotics class designs and builds robots to compete in the Kern Robotics League which participates in VEX Robotics, a worldwide competition group. The KRL consists of nearly 50 teams from schools, including BCHS, across the county.

State & National

Membership Organizations

  • CSF is an academic honors organization that accepts members who meet rigorous academic requirements. CSF stimulates and fosters pride in high standards of scholarship. Its purpose is to identify, motivate, and encourage students with intellectual abilities toward further education. The organization was incorporated under California Law in 1930 and is administered by a state board of directors.

  • Membership in the National Honor Society is a faculty-awarded honor presented to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, character, leadership and service. Students who wish to join the National Honor Society must have maintained an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above with no instances of academic dishonesty. The student must also excel in the additional areas of character, leadership, and service. Selection is a privilege and not all students are awarded membership in to the NHS the first time their achievements are reviewed; some must continue to work on one area or another, most often the areas of leadership and service.

Students meeting certain criteria and requirements may apply to be accepted as members to state and national honors organizations.

These memberships are both impressive on college applications as well as beneficial as an introductory tool to academic societies.
