SPIRITUAL FORMATION

A message from Spiritual Formation Director, Jay Johnson:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16

Recently these verses were used at BCHS’s weekly school chapel. The speaker was sharing on the topic of leadership and characteristics of leadership found in Scripture. It was a great time of reflecting on our lives and encouraging students to live in a way that exemplifies Christ through our actions. It was a fun morning and I love hearing and seeing Scripture used to teach us the same truths that Jesus taught those who were following him. It is so important and relevant to us all.

Over the days and weeks that followed, I have thought about Matthew 5 and the city on a hill many times. There have been a number of times in the last month that I have needed the simple reminder of how I need to respond with light and the goodness of God.  In the craziness of life,  every situation is an opportunity to let Christ shine. This is especially true in our homes as well. The importance of keeping Christ and his light in our lives can, as verse 15 suggests, be like putting a lamp on a stand for the entire house to see.

Showing the compassion and mercy that God has for us and others, sharing the love and joy we have in Christ, the peace, patience and mercy with all whom we come into contact is a great example to our children and families. I really want my kids to follow Christ and show Christ to others through their actions, but I know if I am not setting this example, they will not have it in their lives.  I know this sounds “preachy” or like a sermon, but this is actually what I have been wrestling with on a daily basis and honestly, I do not pretend to think that I have it all figured out. All of this can be much easier said than done. However, it is possible and we have the opportunity to spread the light from one family to so many others. It takes practice and discipline to put that lamp on the stand.  Here are a couple of steps I have been using.

Pray and ask God for help. This is one of the easiest things to do. A simple conversation with a request for strength from the Creator of the universe goes so far and is in fact all part of how God created it to work. We often tell our kids to ask for help. We can and should do the same.

Look to God’s Word. Scripture is full of truth, encouragement and examples for us to follow.  Take a moment to read the very words of God that were given to us so that we can know God and His plan for our lives.

Surround yourself with others who shine brightly. The people you surround yourself with are important. Do they speak truth into your life? Do they lead and draw you closer to Christ, your goals and the way you need to be living? Find others who shine brightly for the gospel of Christ and you will be encouraged to do the same.

Be Thankful. November is always a good reminder to be thankful for all that God has provided. Think of ways that God has provided for you and your family. Take some time to talk about some of the ways God has provided for your family either at a meal or when you are spending time with them.

Colors of Christmas

Mark your calendars for an event you don’t want to miss! “Colors of Christmas” will be held on December 7 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. BCHS welcomes everyone to join in the merriment and celebrate the holiday season. The "Colors of Christmas" event will feature a wide array of festive activities for all ages. This year's theme is centered around the beloved Dr. Seuss character, The Grinch. Attendees can look forward to: The Grinch Village, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, live entertainment, children's activities, and seasonal treats. This event is free of charge, and no tickets are required. All are welcome to attend!

This year the school is partnering with Bakersfield Angels, a local chapter of a national nonprofit, that wraps radical relational support around children, youth and families experiencing foster care. One of their programs, Dare to Dream, pairs youth in foster care with mentors, giving the youth a healthy adult to help them navigate the ups & downs of life. We'll be asking our guests to help Bakersfield Angels gift their Dare to Dream youth this Christmas in one of two ways: You can bring a $10 giftcard to any fast food (Taco Bell, Starbucks, anywhere you like to go!), and drop it off at the Bakersfield Angels' tent as you enter, or scan the QR code at their tent to purchase a weighted blanket--or both!
